Now, some say this study is a hoax, folks. If so, keep it to yourself... and for God's sake, don't tell your woman! If she gives you a hard time about "gazing the racks" when you're out and about, just tell her you're just trying to get healthy. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Saw this international dating article and thought I'd pass it along if you're worried about scammers. I am looking into this seriously, have had friends use the good guys and get burned by the bad guys, and I pass it along in good faith.

Myth-busting: The Foreign Bride Industry

Stereotypes surround the international dating industry for a reason: It has its share of scammers and shady operators. Legitimate agencies like constantly battle these stereotypes because they simply don’t apply. Think about your own job and you’ll understand why.

Stereotyping is ingrained

Ridiculous labels are stuck on almost every profession: Cops are lazy doughnut-munchers, car salesmen are liars, and engineers are nerdy. Doesn’t it tick you off just a bit? It may be a complete fabrication, an outdated misperception, or somewhat true but it doesn’t apply to you.

A few bad apples have painted the entire international dating profession as a bunch of unscrupulous scammers who hire ladies to chat with men for as long as possible. It is true of some, but it doesn’t apply to all. Here’s why.

International matchmaking is unregulated

According to a 2004 report by the Johns Hopkins University’s Protection Project to the US Congress, “The mail-order bride industry is largely unregulated.”

True, there is no professional association or international policing agency in our industry. That’s why the buyer must always beware and read the “fine print” before joining any matchmaking service.

You should also know that since the 2004 report, the US Congress passed the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act. IMBRA helps protect foreign brides by screening prospective grooms for violent backgrounds. Seek out an agency that abides by both IMBRA and its own carefully structured procedure for meeting a lady.

Beware fly-by-night agencies

The Protection Project report also says: “Web-based companies appear and disappear every day.” So true! Many are here today and gone tomorrow, often with your hard-earned money! They deserve human dignity and respect.

Reputable agencies allow like-minded people to find and communicate with one another in a safe, above-board and controlled setting. They should only facilitate communication and meetings -- not guarnatee you'll find the love of your life. No one can do that -- not even my best freind MJ, who "promised" me I'd meet the love of my life three years ago.

That was my last blind date, by the way! He lost a good bet I can't discuss!

More and more men are shrugging off the stigma associated with international dating and just going for it! They’ve tried the girl next door (too small a fishbowl) and domestic dating Web sites (too big an ocean). Instead they’ve found women overseas are just right!
WeTV recently highlighted this trend in a series, the inaccurately named “Mail Order Brides” series. They focused on men who’ve found true love in other countries such as Russia and Ukraine.

The women there, far from being subservient or scammers hungry for a green card, tend to be cultured, educated and, yes, beautiful. I've come to find they are seeking something more in life: true love with the more family-oriented men the US is known for, and a wider horizon. I'm finding they are not bought and sold like chattel; everyone involved is a free agent.

While there are surely scammers out there -- they are the ones who sell email Russian females’ addresses and phone numbers that may or may not be real – the reputable agencies screen the women and collect ID’s. One, HotRussianBrides.com, videotapes the women signing an attestation that they are who they say they are.

With any dating site, guys have to tear their eyes away from the sexy women to read the unsexy fine print. There are immigration hurdles to jump. Luzhkov said the technology is already used to ensure sunny days for special occasions, including the annual parade celebrating victory in World War II.

All it takes, apparently, is the Russian Air Force to seed clouds with silver nitrate, cement, and other Special Ingredients to make it happen. Residents are concerned about climate changes. Scientists doubt this idea has validity. Clouds have a funny way of moving, ya know?
